Henry William Powers was born in London (Shoreditch Q4-1884 1C:77), baptised Hoxton St John 21st December 1884, the son of Thomas Alfred and Elizabeth
POWERS (née HEMMINGS).
1891 census... Aged 6 he was at 9 Salisbury Street, Shoreditch with his father Thomas [33] a collar cutter born London; his mother Elizabeth [33], born London; brother Thomas [8] and sisters Elizabeth C [4] and Maud L [1]. All the children were born in Shoreditch. 1901 census...Aged 16, he was a stable groom at John Bentley's Mitchelgroves Racing Stables in Clapham. The rest of the family had moved to 45 Ufton Road, Hackney. 1911 census... He cannot be identified in this census. Since his daughter was born in Newmarket on 2nd November 1911, he appears to have been in the Newmarket area at the time of the census. Wife, Phoebe, was with her parents Edgar (gamekeeper) and Mary at Philadelphia Farm, Snailwell. He married Phoebe Westley in St Peter's, Snailwell (Newmarket qtr 4-1911 3b:1259) Their daughter, Elizabeth Daisy Powers, was born on 2nd November 1911 in Snailwell and they then lived in Kentford. Phoebe, born in Chippenham on 27-8-1886, was living at Philadelphia Farm, Snailwell, when she met Henry On the pension card she was at Mill House, Snailwell, and 2 years after she was widowed she married Leonard Brown, whom she had probably met at school in Exning. She did not have any more children. |

He enlisted in Newmarket. On the 10th March 1917 the 53rd Brigade attacked and captured Irles and Grevillers. On the 11th the Berkshires relieved the 10th Essex and 8th Norfolks holding Irles and the posts around it.
